About the digital versions of ILLA volumes 1 & 3Volumes 1 and 3 of the series Indigenous Languages of Latin America (ISSN 1567-813X), which was closed in 2008, are now out of print, and a second printing is not expected. Even though these volumes resulted from presentations at international events of work in progress between 1997 and 2002, much of their contents remains valuable. Therefore, we thought it would be a good idea to make them accessible online. We asked the authors for permission and we received many positive responses. Not everyone responded, but because of the enthusiastic reactions of the others we assumed that those who remained quiet do not have anything against an online re-publication of their contributions to the volumes 1 and 3 of ILLA. We thank the authors for their cooperation, as well as the moderators of the Etnolinguística website for their hospitality. Our original purpose was a digital facsimile re-publication of the two volumes without any changes. However, a scanned version would be rather heavy, both in terms of bytes and in terms of labour. Since we still had the old Word and WordPerfect files of the articles, we decided to use these as the basis for digitisation of the volumes. In 2000 and 2002 the volumes were printed on the basis of a camera-ready manuscript, which had been prepared on different computers in different, now obsolete program versions. Therefore, it was at times necessary to adapt the lay-out, before converting the files to PDF format. The original font, page lay-out, and page numbering were maintained, and all section titles, examples and tables are found on the same pages as in the original printed versions. We just cannot guarantee that every single word in the text is found on the very same line as in the original, and sometimes the last line of a page has jumped to the next page in the digital version. Apart from this, the re-publication can be considered identical with the original versions. Nevertheless, we could not resist the temptation to correct some minor errors. With regard to volume 1, the main title, Indigenous Languages of Lowland South America, was both on the cover and on the bastard title page, but it was absent on the title page itself (p. iii). However, we did resist the temptation to correct the painful orthographic error in the Spanish subtitle, in order to prevent a discrepancy with library cataloguing. Furthermore, we corrected the identification of the author of the cover photograph, which was attributed erroneously to E.M. Villalón in the printed version (p. iv). Finally, we corrected cosmetic errors we encountered along the way, such as inconsistent use of italic type, wrong capitalisations, a lacking tab stop, unclosed parentheses, badly aligned glosses, some errors in bibliographical references, etc. etc. With regard to volume 3 we corrected an annoying error in E. Herrera’s article, where we had omitted figure 5b in the printed version on page 122. As a consequence of the correction the article gained another page (fortunately a blank even page in the original). In the German and English versions of the article by R. Snethlage we corrected a sentence. In the printed version of the article by P. Viegas Barros we had created many unfortunate font errors, which now have been corrected. Also, we corrected the representation of the personal names of some contributors. Aside from these particular improvements, we corrected the same kind of small and marginal errors as in volume 1.
