Resumo

This Museum, the newest and most modern in the Brazilian capital, and scarcely two years old, has already captured the attention of the specialists, because of its innovations in the field of museology. In all its details, this Museum is an expression of present trends in ethnology, which, throwing former prejudices overboard, is now taking a keener interest in the human problems of the populations it studies. Classical ethnology regarded the so-called primitive peoples simply as fossils of the human race, interesting merely as illustrating the archaic conditions through which our own society had necessarily to pass. Thus one of the functions of traditional museums of ethnology was to present exhibitions on these peoples in so far as they were exotic and different from ourselves; the visitor went to learn about headhunters, cannibals and practisers of self-mutilation, and these filled him with terror, perplexity or even disgust — never with a feeling of fellow-interest in the dramatic fate of the peoples in question, or of understanding for their artistic creations. The aims of this Museum, set up by the Service for the Protection of Indians, are entirely different. The Museum was arranged in such a way as to arouse sympathy for the Indians, presenting them as human beings who, within the limitations of their culture and the resources of their habitat, worked out their own solutions for universal human problems. This result has been obtained without any distortion of the facts; on the contrary, it lends greater emphasis to what is really most characteristic in the Indians' daily life — their struggle for existence, their family relationships, their attitude towards their children, their joy of living, and the search for beauty which they express in all their works.
